Quick Update

Been up with the little guy and trying to decide whether I should make the trip to Indy tomorrow in the snow... anyway thought I would give a quick update before he wakes up again. We had such a wonderful Christmas!! Nathan is continuing to improve each day. He can easily say mama, dada, hi, bye bye, hat, help me, and there are so many other words that he can say with just a little more work. On Christmas, we were having a birthday party for Jesus and I let him have a little piece of chocolate cake (probably only his second time to taste chocolate). He inhaled it and asked for "more mama"! This was the first time he had used this phrase and it was totally unprompted. I guess I now know what motivates him to speak :)

Anyway, his therapists are all so happy with his progress. The more he is verbalizing however, the more apparent it is that he is definitely apraxic. For instance, "baby" may come out as "heho" or something totally off the wall. He also still leaves a lot of consonants off the end of words, but is doing better. I just feel so bad that the poor kid has to work so hard at saying the most simple things. He is such a sweet boy and of course I hate that he has to deal with this. But I just continue to be thankful that he is healthy and happy- I know it could be so much worse.

Back to sleep for me...I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Amen!

So tonight Nathan and I were talking to Jesus like we do every night before bed. When we were done and I said Amen, Nathan followed with "Men-A"! He was so excited but knew it wasn't quite right and kept trying until he got pretty darn close to Amen. We had to keep saying short one sentence prayers so that he could say it again :)

Also, his speech therapist is going to be able to get us a second spot each week beginning in January- yay! We love Tracy! She used animal hand puppets with him a couple of weeks ago, so I ordered some on Amazon and we got them today. Nathan was running around the living room with them yelling different animal sounds...and of course bopping Logan with them too (he's quite good at saying "bop" if he is able to actually bop his little brother while he says it). My hope is that not only will they help him to learn the animal sounds and names but they will be a fun way for him to get used to having something on his hands. Right now he cries every time he puts gloves on, which is bad news since he loves to be outside in the winter.

Well, it's time to clean the house and get everything ready for tomorrow. It's going to be another long day in Indy. I sure will be glad when work slows down a little but I'm just beyond grateful to have a great job right now. Good night everyone!

So many words, so few updates

All I can say is "wow". And now, Nathan can say so much more than just wow! The good thing about my blog laziness is that when I do finally update, I have so many awesome things to report :)

Nathan has so many new words, we haven't really been able to keep track of them. He will pretty much attempt almost any simple word we give him now. As long as it starts with one of the letters he can produce, he will make an effort. It may or may not sound like the word he is trying to say, and he will almost always leave off the last consonant, but the fact that he is attempting words is amazing. And even more amazing is that he is using some spontaneous speech now. He has said "ha" when the hat fell off of his toy, he has pointed to a ball and said "ba", and tonight when I asked him what he wanted to eat for dinner, he said "a-bo" (apple)! You better believe I gave him an apple- I would have given him 100 apples for that response!

Therapy has been going great, and he will be starting in Indy next week. For now, he will be going every other week for speech and OT. He'll also be doing speech and OT at least once a week in Terre Haute, he'll continue DT with First Steps once a week and beginning in January, he will be doing speech twice a week at Indiana State. We'll keep this up as long as he is progressing and continuing to have fun. If it gets to be too much, we'll definitely cut back.

So that's our last two weeks in a nutshell. Grumpy pants Logan has decided to start waking every hour through the night again so when the evening chores are finished, I've been heading to bed rather than getting on the computer. However, Nathan just woke up with a nosebleed, so I was headed to the laundry room to clean all the bloody sheets and the three outfits that Logan pooped on today and thought I would jump on here real quick. Hope all is well with everyone!
